VA Nursing Home Ratings Continue to Dwindle
People cringe when they hear the words “nursing home,” let alone “VA nursing home.” We decided to take a deeper look at VA nursing home ratings.
VA Nursing Home Ratings
Knowing that people who have put their lives on the line for our country are now having to put their lives on the line in VA nursing homes is disgusting. According to The Department of Veterans Affairs, there are more 1 star and 2 star rated VA nursing homes in the United States than there are 3, 4 and 5 star rated VA nursing homes combined.
Nursing homes, nowadays referred to as “rehabilitation centers” or “long-term care centers,” are inspected by state surveyors at least once a year. Surveyors look at kitchen cleanliness, activities calendars for the residents, medical record keeping, food prep, admissions paperwork and beyond. They even look to see what the marketing office looks like and how the administrative assistant answers the phone. The nursing homes have the potential of being inspected more than once that if certain complaints are filed with the state. A state surveyor can walk into a facility unannounced at any time. Legally, these survey results are publicly posted for a minimum of three years. Homes that are continuously awarded with “deficiency free” ratings are few and far between.
According to a news article posted in USA Today on November 19, 2018, the VA had released its quality information; however, it had yet to release the inspection reports. This is unbelievable as it is standard procedure for nursing homes to post their inspection reports.
These VA nursing home ratings are unacceptable. How it is possible that the nation has let these homes go into such disarray? Why aren’t they held accountable like public nursing homes?
This comes back to VA leadership and funding. Without the right elected officials in office, these homes will continue down this path and veterans will continue to live in worse conditions than they would be faced with on the streets.
Veterans Action Network will continue to monitor VA nursing home ratings and update our members and followers on their status. Follow us on social media to keep up, join our email list, or donate to support to our cause.
